Today is the first Sunday of Advent, so it is time to put the Ambrose Advent candles into service.
I checked on hives at the Harvard Yard, the Downtown Library and the Big Garden today. The hives are covered in snow and temperatures have rarely exceeded freezing in the last 10 days. Several nights saw temperatures at or below zero-dgrees F. I inserted entrance reducers in the front of each hive and stuffed some hard foam into the rear gaps under the screened bottom boards to inhibit drafts. In addition I stapled some thin foam across a few of the box-joints where drafts could otherwise enter the hives. Not much else to do until spring time.
